Make Our Garden Grow
Description
Candide is a 1956 operetta based on the novella of the same name by Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet). Bernstein turns a serious philosophical novel about cultural indoctrination and the nature of optimism into a poignant yet comical musical. Make Our Garden Grow occurs in the finale of the musical when the main character, Candide, realizes that the only purpose of living is to cultivate the earth—plant a garden. The song, which also serves as a wedding proposal, begins with, “I’ve been a fool and so have you,” and concludes with the entire cast singing a hymn to optimism reimagined as practical necessity.
